You can do it, Kalam tells youth

LONDON: The former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws by Queen’s University, Belfast, for distinction in public service.
The degree was conferred on him at a special ceremony on Wednesday. Queen’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Gregson described Mr. Kalam as an “outstanding world statesman, scientist, educator and visionary” who had “inspired millions” in India and around the world.
“It is a significant honour for Queen’s to host this visit from the former leader of one of the world’s most thriving and exciting countries. A number of distinguished Indian institutions hold a special place within the Queen’s family of academic partners and Mr. Kalam’s visit is a tangible example of the educational, research, business and cultural links between India and Northern Ireland,” he said.
Sir Reg Empey, Northern Ireland’s Minister for Employment and Learning, said the decision reflected Queen’s University’s close links with India.
Mr. Kalam called for pooling global resources for common good. He said that in today’s “borderless world,” countries could not afford to remain isolated as problems affecting one country had implications for others.

Imaginative leadership
Mr. Kalam said he had noticed “anxiety” among youth on how to deal with a world “devastated” by conflict. But he said: “Youth can do it,” He called for “imaginative leadership” to bring people together and build a peaceful world.
